Pulmonary surfactant is a complex of lipids and proteins whose function is to prevent the alveoli from collapsing at expiration. Surfactant A (SP-A) belong to the collectin family and play a key role in the innate immunity of the lung. Since SP-A is abundantly expressed in the lung and only in the lung, the proteins are now used clinically as biomarkers for lung diseases.
